Windows11 (Parallels) | Printer setting

I had a problem to print out a letter sheet (Japanese letter 100 x 148) and self-solved it by configuring printer related setting on my Mac, Parallels windows, and Windows 11. Here is the note for memorization for the problem prevention in the future.

Environment

  • Macbook Pro(14-inch 2021, Apple M1 Pro chip), macOS Monterey
  • Parallels Desktop for Mac (Pro Edition 18.1.0)
  • Widows 11 Client Arm64 Insider Preview(Dev Channel) - Build 25227
  • Printer: CANON TS6030

Problem

As a default settings, parallels windows supports to use printers configured by Mac. I see the listed printers on Windows as well as Mac. However, I could not use these printers - even though the printer queue on Windows printer console could accept the print job, it remained on the queue and was not completed the printing.

Solution

1. Share the printer on Mac

On Mac, share the printer.

  • On System Preferences > Sharing
    • Check Printer Sharing
    • Printers:
      • Check the printer (e.g. “canon TS6030”)
      • Select “Everyone can print”

2. Configure Parallels

For configuring a printer directly on local network, we need to get the shared printer off on parallels.

  • On Parallels Desktop, open configuration
    • Shared Printers
      • Unselect a check box of Share Mac printers with Windows 11 ../../../../images/windows/parallels_printer_setting.jpg
    • Network
      • Change Source to Default Adapter (*) ../../../../images/windows/parallels_printer_nwsetting.jpg

(*) The default Network Source on Parallels is Shared Network. If Shared Network, the network adapter is configured with internal network in Mac (IP address by ipconfig shows something like 10.211.5x.x). By changing network source to Default Adapter, the network adapter shows local network address like 192.168.0.12 and it can refer the printer’s IP address on the local network.

3. Configure Windows

From Windows Printer and Scanner console, Add printer. In my case, I added it by select the one (canon TS6030) from automatically listed printers' list. Or, you would be able to configure it by specifying the local printer address (e.g. 192.168.0.19).

Then, I could print out the letter format by selecting the added printer directly from Word application on windows.
